Rome Brain death conference 2009

Welcome on the website of EPLD-medical pro-life association!

Dear visitor, dear medical colleague,

in 19-2-2009 was (at the Columbus-Hotel) an international conference on brain-death:

Title:   “Signs of Life -  Is ‘brain death’ still Life?” “I Segni della vita -  la ‘Morte cerebrale’ è ancora vita?”

Organisation Committee:  Associazione Famiglia Domani, Human Life International, Northwest Ohio Catholic medical                                    Association, Human Life International

Roman Declaration about „Brain Death“ (Rome 2-19-2009)
 The signers state:

During the International Congress “Signs of Life – Is ‘Brain Death’ still life?” scientists from medicine, philosophy and jurisprudence unanimously stated that the “brain death concept” is no longer scientifically valid. Therefore patients declared “brain dead” are unmistakably still alive.

That is why the statement is not correct that patients declared “brain dead” are dead and their state would allow organ removal while their hearts are still beating. Organ removal causes death and prevents an undisturbed and individual dying process.

The scientists- doctors, lawyers, philosophers – and prolifers and next of kin of so-called organ donors who met in Rome share the following aim: They work towards convincing doctors, politicians and representatives of the Churches (especially the Holy Father) to recognize that “brain death” is not the death of a dying patient. They are aware of the consequences: The transplantation medicine will be refined when no more “living” organs from dying patients are available.

The dying patient has a right to live individually, peacefully and with dignity until he dies. He has to be protected as long as he lives. People should also veto any utilitarian actions concerning their dying process that are taken in favour of other patients.

Any utilitarian manipulation of a dying person (after “brain death” or after stop of heartbeat [NHBD] must be banned.

At the end of the congress all participants from different countries agreed to found the International Network “Pro Life against Brain Death”. The aim is to cooperate internationally and to keep each other and the public informed.

Our comment and goals as European pro-Life Doctors:

1) Strategic proposals       more ACTUAL

2) Three physicians from Germany (EPLD and Munich Catholic Physicians) will participate as medical prolifers with the goal:

- To rappresentate the German and European pro-life doctors,

- To inform and unify the European pro-life physicians with the goal to defence the right of life of the dying patients

- To propone the foundation of a medical association against the explantation of organs while the heart is still beating.

All medical fellows and colleagues of Italiy and Europe are cordially invited to a meeting before and after the official conference (Hotel Columbus), to discuss the situation and the possibilities as prolife-physicians (ands priests and philosofers) who to organize e serious, Christian and medical resistance to protect our patients / families / society / church from the euphoric transplantation medicine.

As Christian doctors we have to protect the normal, natural human death.

Let us help Pope Benedikt XVI to make his message (6-11-2008) clearer for uns prolifers, doctors and dying people. The Catholic church has to say: “No explantation of human organs while the heart of thLetis patient is still beating.”

Let us inform our Holy Father and the Holy See:  “Brain-death people is still allive!”

Do You have other proposals? Please keep us informed (contact).

Best wishes & greetings from Munich in Germany

Dr. Gero Winkelmann, Director of EPLD
